Event Description

The Pilgrimage to Chimayo: A Contemporary Portrait of a Living Tradition

In 1996 a team of four photographers and two oral historians became pilgrims to document North America ’s largest pilgrimage.

The exhibit was first produced at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology in 1999. It traveled to Chimayo before it went on a multi year extended tour to Spain , Andorra and Bolivia .

The exhibit consists of 36 photographs by Miquel Gandert, Cary Herz, Sam Howarth and Oscar Lozoya; as well as quotes from pilgrims by oral historians Enrique Lamadrid, Troy Fernandez.; and Jack Loefler narrator of a sound tract.

This timely exhibit is on display at the Raton Museum and was made possible through the New Mexico Endowment for the Humanities.

Raton's history as a ranching, railroading, and mining community is told through permanent displays which feature the museum's extensive collection of artifacts and photography. A changing series of special exhibits highlight the history of the region. Admission to the Raton Museum is always free.

Raton Museum hours:
Wednesday – Saturday 10am – 4pm
