World Migratory Bird Day – Beaver Pond

May 10

Join a ranger-guided walk along Chicorica Creek to observe various bird species in their natural habitats. The area includes willow thickets and cottonwood forests, with beaver-dammed wetlands attracting numerous migrant and breeding songbirds.

The NRA Whittington Center in Raton, New Mexico, offers a wide array of summer events, competitions, and training programs for enthusiasts of all skill levels. Spanning 33,000 acres, the center is renowned for its comprehensive shooting facilities, educational programs, and commitment to safety. Capulin Volcano Night Sky Viewing

May 3, 24, & 31 at 8:30 p.m.

Experience the wonders of the cosmos at Capulin Volcano National Monument, a designated Gold Tier International Dark Sky Park renowned for its exceptionally dark skies. Throughout the summer, the park hosts night sky viewing events on most Saturday nights, offering visitors the chance to observe planets, galaxies, and nebulae through provided telescopes. These events typically begin at 8:30 p.m.; attendees are advised to follow red lights from the Visitor Center to the observing area and to dress warmly due to cooler evening temperatures at the park's elevation of over 6,000 feet.


Cinco de Mayo Fiesta

May 3-4 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Celebrate Mexican culture at the Bubble Hearts & Lil C's Second Annual Cinco de Mayo Fiesta, taking place on May 3 and 4, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Ripley Park in Raton, NM. This free, family-friendly event features live music, authentic Mexican cuisine, traditional performances, games, raffles, and more, offering a vibrant atmosphere for all ages.

Let's Talk History

May 9 & 23 from 3-5 p.m.

Hosted at the Arthur Johnson Memorial Library, dive into history where Raton's past comes alive with tales of the Santa Fe Trail, hidden stories from the Sierra Grande, and plenty of exciting topics from local history buffs and historians.


Allienace Brass Performance at the Shuler Theater

May 10 at 7 p.m.

On May 10, 2025, at 7:00 PM, the Alliance Brass will perform "Celebrating Stage and Screen" at Raton's historic Shuler Theater, presented by the Raton Arts & Humanities Council. Acclaimed as “the perfect blend of virtuosity and vitality” (Chicago Brass Festival), the Alliance Brass has emerged as one of the country’s most exciting ensembles. Dazzling audiences with a repertoire ranging from the early Renaissance to jazz and beyond, the ensemble’s rigorous performance schedule has brought audiences to their feet all over the United States.


Moonlight Hike at Capulin Volcano

May 10 at 8 p.m.

Experience the magic of a full moon illuminating the volcanic landscape during Capulin Volcano National Monument's Moonlight Hike, where a ranger-led trek along the crater rim explores nocturnal wildlife, lunar geology, and astronomy. These free, reservation-required hikes occur monthly from May through October, with start times varying by date; for more information or to reserve your spot, call 575-278-2201.


Trail Improvement Project

May 16-18

Volunteers can participate in a trail improvement project to enhance the Wapiti Trail and surrounding areas near Lake Maloya. Activities include clearing brush, improving drainage, and maintaining shoreline access for anglers.


Folsom Site Tour

May 17 from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Organized by the Folsom Museum, offers a unique opportunity to explore the renowned archaeological site where evidence of early human habitation in North America was discovered. Led by knowledgeable guides, the tour delves into the history of the Folsom tradition and the significant findings that have shaped our understanding of prehistoric cultures.


Vermejo Charcoal Burner

May 17

The Vermejo Charcoal Burner is an annual gravel ride and run event held on May 17, 2025, at the expansive 558,000-acre Vermejo Park Ranch in Raton, New Mexico. Participants can choose from various race categories, including 99-mile, 66-mile, and 41-mile gravel bike routes, as well as a 13.1-mile half marathon run, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Southern Rockies and historic charcoal ovens.

Kiwanis Club & Friends of Sugarite Canyon Annual Fishing Derby
