Raton's location makes it a prime location for fishing enthusiasts with many gorgeous and productive streams and lakes in our region.
Sugarite Canyon State Park is the closest and best fishing location to Raton. Sugarite is home to two lakes, Lake Alice and Lake Maloya.
Lake Maloya is a 130 acre lake located on the New Mexico/Colorado boarder. The lake is handicap accessible with accessible dock fishing. Primarily stocked with Rainbow Trout, Lake Maloya allows paddle, sail or electric boating.
Lake Alice is located south of the Lake Maloya dam. It's location makes the lake easily accessible. Lake Alice is known to be a prime spot for fly fishing.
Both lakes are located on state land, so all Game & Fish rules/fares apply.

Located just over the Colorado Border, a short 30 minute drive from Raton, is Trinidad Lake State Park. The mild climate and large lake area makes the lake ideal for water sports. Anglers catch rainbow and brown trout, large mouth bass, catfish and walleye out of this large reservoir.

Cimarron Canyon is a fly fisher's paradise. With a network of streams and lakes, there are primes wading spots that attract fly fishermen from near and far. The Cimarron River flows through the canyon and onto Eagle Nest on the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway.
